Obalon is the first and only swallowable intragastic (within the stomach) balloon system. The patient swallows a capsule, about the size of a vitamin, that holds the balloon. An X-ray is taken to confirm the balloon is now within the stomach.
The capsule dissolves, and the balloon is inflated with gas through the micro-catheter (very thin tube), which is then removed. The entire procedure takes only minutes to complete. The balloon, once inflated, is about the size of an orange. It fills space in the stomach, causing the patient to eat less and lose weight. Three balloons are placed over a three-month period. The balloons float to the top of the stomach cavity. At the end of the treatment period, the balloons are removed. This is not the appropriate treatment for people who had weight loss surgery in the past.

Will my activity be limited due to the balloons?
Our clients can usually resume normal activities immediately after each balloon placement procedure (there are a series of three balloons placed). Certain non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs must be avoided during the time in which the balloons are in your stomach. As the gas that inflates the balloons is affected by elevation, the balloons cannot be placed if you plan to live in an area at an altitude more than 4,000 feet higher or 2,500 feet lower than the location where you got the balloon placement procedure.
